In network marketing, building wide will get you started—but building deep is what ensures long-term sustainability and success. It’s the difference between chasing active income and developing true residual income. Let’s dive into the art of “building in depth,” a foundational concept that can transform your business from fragile to unshakable.

What Does Building Depth Mean?

Building depth involves helping your team members not only succeed but also helping their recruits—and then repeating that cycle multiple levels deep. You’re creating layers of leadership, each one stronger and more independent than the last. The goal? To build leaders, not needers.

Why Depth Matters

  • Stability: A deep team continues to generate volume even if your first-line members slow down or step away. This is the foundation of residual income.

  • Leadership Development: When you invest in developing your team members, it builds loyalty and leadership capabilities. They feel seen, heard, and supported.

  • Faster Rank Advancement: A strong, engaged downline pushes you up the ranks more consistently than a wide, shallow team ever could.

From Struggles to Strategy

Many marketers hit a plateau. Maybe you're stuck at a certain rank, like Senior Director, and don’t know how to break through. For Vic & Diana (lovingly nicknamed Di), the turning point came at an event, simply by being open to learning. A conversation with another leader turned into a breakthrough, because they listened with intention—not just good intentions.

👉 Key takeaway: Be willing to attend events, absorb feedback, and act on it. Events are more than just motivation—they're strategy incubators.

Laying the Foundation: Starting Strong With New Partners

The first few days are critical. Launch your new Brand Partners within 72 hours to maintain momentum. Here's how:

  1. Meet & Goal Set: Establish clear, time-bound business goals.

  2. Private Launch Zoom: Host two to three launch presentations for them. Invite at least 10 people per session—expect 2–4 to attend.

  3. Duplicate: The goal is not to host forever but to help them become the host.

Use a clear, confident script—but make it your own. People connect with authenticity, not memorization.

Serve First, Lead Always

Not every personality will vibe with yours, and that’s okay. Your role is to help your team succeed, even if it means connecting them with someone else in your upline. Remember: this isn’t about you—it’s about them. Serve first, and success will follow. One of the most powerful takeaways for many on our team came from Di, who shared why her favorite quote is by Mahatma Gandhi: "A sign of a good leader is not how many followers you have, but how many leaders you create." by Mahatma Gandi. She explained:

“In this industry it’s not about you. You can’t be selfish. The most successful leaders have servant hearts. They want to help others not just physically but want to mentor others so they can lead and benefit financially as well. Creating leaders is what it’s all about!”

Systems that Scale

A weekly and bi-weekly Zoom onboarding system helps maintain rhythm as your team grows. Tools like the Back Office, In Touch App, www.ThisIsItTeam.com and Pay Portal provide structure and professionalism. Keep the onboarding process consistent—this is how duplication thrives.

Events Are Not Optional—They’re Essential

Events are the heartbeat of network marketing. They provide:

  1. Credibility & Trust: Face-to-face interaction humanizes the business.

  2. Belief & Motivation: Team members leave inspired, empowered, and ready to act.

  3. Team Culture: Shared experiences build unity and loyalty.

  4. Duplication & Urgency: Attending, learning, bringing others—this is the duplication cycle in motion.

  5. Bigger Vision: Events expand what’s possible. They turn small goals into bold visions.

Conclusion: Depth is the Difference

If you want to create something lasting, focus less on how many people you personally bring in and more on how many leaders you build underneath you. Show up. Serve. Be intentional. Train others to do the same. The deeper your roots, the taller your tree.
